Continuous Community Learning

Hello folks,

Kaushik and me just had a discussion regarding the various topics that you folks can expect for the placements. Here are a few of the topics as per my knowledge. People who have recently been placed, do feel free to add more topics.

Basically the placement activity is broken up into 2 - 3 phases namely,

1. Writtent Test

2. Group Discussion (Not all companies have G.D.)

3. Technical and HR interviews

1. Written Test

Most of the companies have a general as well as technical aptitude.

General aptitude test consists of problems related to time, work, speed, logical reasoning, etc. whereas technical aptitude consists of questions on C, C++ and Java and data structures and DBMS too. :-)

Technical aptitude may contain questions of the multiple choice multiple answers type, multiple choice single answer type, or predict the output type of questions. Also you may be asked to write basic logic based programs.

Certain companies allow the students to select the technical subject of their choice(C/ C++/ Java) and answer only questions related to that subject whereas other companies make it compulsory to answer questions related to all 3 languages.

There are a handful of companies which have aptitude test specifically on C, C++ and pointers (eg. QuickHeal).

In addition to this, some of the companies also ask the students to write some kind of formal communication, eg. a letter to the project manager asking leave for some reason or an essay on current affairs(for us we had to write essays on Recession, Globalisation, Global Warming, etc.)

2. G.D.

As mentioned above, not all companies have G.D. The topics are mostly of a social ( eg. Arranged marraiges vs. love marriages) or current affair( eg. Ayodhya verdict , Commonwealth Games scandal) nature.

3. Interviews

Most of the companies have 1 - 2 technical interviews followed by an HR interview.

The technical interviewers test you on the knowledge of the languages which you have included in your resumes.

HR interviews basically target your social standing and test your comfort and fluency in English, your confidence, whether you are a team worker ot not, whether you are aware of your weak and strong points, etc. Basically, be yourself. Don't try to mug up answers for this ;-)

These are more or less the topics that folks should be prepared with for placements.

Cheers,

Nikhil

Hello,

Projects... is one more point of focus. Infact, many companies get into minute details of it.
Right from why did you selected the particular one to whether you followed any development
model and all.. "Unix internals" / O.S. can also be asked.

cheers,
Hrushikesh

Right Hrushikesh. Excellent point brought up. Many companies focus the technical interviews on projects, since they feel that the students should have a thorough knowledge of what they've worked on. Forgot to put it in... Thanks.
