We had a great session today on Placements at Wadia college today, driven by Aurobindo Sarkar and must say it was a rare combination; it was both an informative and fun session. I have tried to summarize all the key aspects covered in the session, covering both the session details and the audience response, but this in no way complete and those who attended please feel free to add in your additional inputs and comments to this post. This may not exactly represent what was said in the session, i have included my inputs as well.
Why is doing well in college/placements important to you?
This was the first question posed to the audience and discussed. Couple of reasons that came in from the audience and are very relevant:
Couple of additional reasons why it’s critical to do well:
Do not treat this as additional pressure. However keep this in mind that you should always put your best foot forward, next time you think about throwing an attitude in front a company that you do not like and do not wish to join keep in mind your broader responsibilities.
Key Elements of Placements
1) Pre-placement talks:
Companies conduct a pre-placement talk to give more information on their background and the kind of work they do. Also typically indicate the area of work you can expect to work on. The main purpose is to actually Sell the company to you as a prospective employee.
It’s a good idea to prepare for a pre-placement talk.
Questions you could ask during this session:
Do not ask:
2) Resume:
Building a good resume is a very critical aspect of your placement process. Here are some key aspects:
3) Interviews
Interviews are typically different based on the type of company visiting.
Services Companies:
Startups:
Product Companies:
How to prepare for an interview:
4) Top Few Difficult Interview Questions:
Tell Me About Yourself: Have a summary version and an extended version if they let you continue for a longer duration. Keep a list of 4-5 key areas you want to cover and make sure you rehearse this question.
What are your strengths and weaknesses: Do not fudge your weakness trying to present strength as a weakness instead. Instead think of a real one which would not impact your ability to work and present that in a factual way.
Ethical Questions: Stay on the right side of ethics. Do not cheat and do not support it during your interviews.
Your biggest challenge: Make sure you have this thought out and its something that happened in the last 3-5 years. Do not rake up a childhood incident :-)
5) Other Key Aspects
Take your time to think and answer: Generally take your time to respond to questions. It’s ok to ask for a moment to think about an answer if you need some time. People want to hire thoughtful people and those who think through their answers and not necessarily people who rush into their answers.
Be Bold: Do not worry about rejects but be bold. Being defensive and worried does not reflect well and you may face a reject in any case, instead be bold and give it your best shot.
Companies look for a spark: More than anything else they are looking for a spark from you. They are looking for enthusiasm and the energy of youth. While all the technical aspects and your course are critical these are the aspects that make a difference. Make sure the energy shows.
Be Confident, Not Arrogant: It’s ok to be confident and bold but do not be arrogant. Make sure you put your points across in a clear, firm but polite way.

question asked in most interviews "Tell me about ur self"
what we should include & exclude in the reply?
Just to add to the "HOW To's" these are some more important key points just to add in..(although its not written by me i thought this would be useful, and i personally feel that BODY LANGUAGE and a FIRM HANDSHAKE are also one of the most important aspect which is talked about very less)
Whether you're looking for your first job or your fifth, whether you're after an entry-level sales position or top management spots, there are some universal rules to successfully negotiating interviews.
An interview is not a two way street! It is your job to sell yourself with a positive attitude and enthusiasm. Regardless of your initial impression of the job opportunity, your main objective is to obtain a JOB OFFER by outshining the competition. It is impossible to properly evaluate a position before a bona fide offer has been extended. Preparation for an interview should be a serious matter. Interviewers are looking at you not only as a candidate but as a performer in their organization. A JOB interview can be a nerve-wracking experience if you are not prepared and lack self-confidence.
In a face to face job interview you "sell" yourself. Here are some interview tips and techniques that will answer a common question - how to face an interview wisely:
1. Research: One of the first questions that still take a lot of people taken aback is what do you know about this company and the position in this company you candidate for? The best way to answer this question is to actually do some research on the said company.
2. Professional skills: What you would offer to the company if YOU are hired? The best way to answer this question is to give the interviewer an idea of your understanding of the job. A brief go through of your areas of
3. Interviewer Questions: Another two tough interview questions are why you would want to work for this particular company and what do you know about the company.
4. Interviewee Questions to ask on your job interview: No interview is over without cross questioning. In fact, the process of you asking any questions about the company only go on to prove how experienced you are in your line of profession.
Few more tips for interview, Pre-Interview:
- Go to the library or use the Web and research the company. Find things to discuss during the interview. This impresses the interviewer.
- Know the five year growth of the company and future direction.
- Know the company's financial position, i.e. net worth, stock price etc.
- Know the competitors.
- Know the product line.
Attire: Employers reject improperly dressed candidates. Accept the fact that many employers have an unwritten dress code and like to hire properly dressed candidates. Forget your own personal preference. You should dress according to the impression you want to create, i.e., successful, conservative, and business-like.
Timing:
- Get exact directions to the interview site at least one day ahead of time.
- Be 15 minutes early.
- Be courteous to the staff...especially the secretary. An employer is always influenced by opinions of other employees.
Resume: Take a resume with you even if the interviewer has one.
- Do not fold it!
- Offer the resume to the person in a new file folder.
- References
- Take your "that a boy" letters and offer them at the appropriate time.
- When requested, provide a typed list of names, addresses, phone numbers, and letters of personal and professional references.
If you are interested in the position, stress this to the interviewer. If you get the impression that the interview is not going well and that you have already been rejected,do not let your discou
